American IDOL Season 12
Keith Urban is perhaps the most unlikely judge on the hit singing competition, and he admits that his welcoming was a bit unexpected. “The camaraderie with these four was really welcoming. I wasn’t expecting the warmth I felt.” We can only imagine his biggest struggle this season will be competing for attention with the boisterous Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj also on the panel.Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson, Keith Urban and Ryan Seacrestgathered during The Television Critic Association’s Winter Preview Party to discuss the upcoming season of American Idol. The media pressed to confirm rumors of behind-the-scenes cat fights, but no one would acknowledge that there’s any blood. However, we can confirm that it will be a high energy, action-pack season. The judges and host weren’t afraid to spill a few secrets today.
This show isn’t for rappers. Nicki Minaj is known for her R&B vocals, including her rhymes, but this doesn’t mean fans should expect her to bring this to Idol. She explained that the show is ”definitely not a rap competition.” Good thing The Voice and The X Factor also exist.
The judges are no strangers to singing competitions. Keith Urban admitted the he auditioned for three talent competitions as a small child, but never made it through to any of the contests. (We can’t help but think a few people are feeling a little silly today about this choice). Randy Jackson is the obvious king of reality TV with a variety of shows under his belt, while Nicki Minaj was never shy about wanting to judge on the show. The most shocking revelation may come from Meme who admits she would have been “too shy” early in her career to put herself out on a show.
It’s the year of girls. No girl has won American Idol since Jordin Sparks took the crown in 2007. Mariah feels that it could be a girl that wins this year. ”A lot more girls seemed to have a lot of potential,” she shared. Producer Nigel Lythgoe agreed. ”The girls are pretty strong this year — stronger than the boys. You know, we’ve had a real spate of what’s been called ‘white boy with guitar.’” Let’s just ignore the success last season’s “white boy with a guitar” has had since May.
This isn’t The X Factor or the Voice. Randy Jackson was quick to point out that American Idol has one solid foundation- “The judges don’t win. The contestants win.”
